PSMC History

Before the PSMC...

In 1977 a group of people, primarily in California, formed the Western Mastiff Fanciers Club. Their territory included everything west of the Mississippi.

As the club grew, the decision was made to become an AKC Sanctioned club. In late 1989 they received AKC recognition. With this recognition they were required to have an area of operations which was set at an approximate 50 mile radius of San Francisco. AKC also required they rename the club since the Western Mastiff Fancier's name was too broad in scope. It was then they became the "Redwood Empire Mastiff Club" (REMC).

How the PSMC Came To Be...

With the limited radius of the REMC, they were unable to accept new members outside of their territory. There were growing numbers of people interested in the mastiff breed in Southern CA, AZ & NV, however being outside the REMC territory, they were excluded from joining.

In 1989 the PSMC had it's beginnings when most of the original group of founding members gathered and participated in a "Mastiff Fun Match" supported by Joe and Carla Sanchez. There was a meeting with discussion on forming a club. This was the beginning of what later became the Pacific Southwest Mastiff Club. The club was officially formed in March 1993. There were 19 founding members.
